Nameless Freedom

Nameless freedom

Is what I search

Nameless freedom

Is what I long

Five elements dance within

Fire burns strong

Water flows clean

Wood grows long

Metal refines pure

All ready to endure

Explosive chaos

To eternal Harmony

By the clear lake of mind

The lotus heart tingles

Ready to blossom

And spread Love into the world

By the clear lake of mind

The dragonfly flies

In circles

Teaching the impermanence of life

By the clear lake of mind

The fisherman knits his net of interdependence

Ready to catch

The erroneous fish of isolated existence

By the clear lake of mind

The woodcutter sharpens his axe of wisdom

Ready to chop down

The vine-tree of ignorance

By the clear lake of mind

The yogi meditates

Ready to battle his ego

To finally realize Shunyata

By the clear lake of mind

A bird is perched

On the tree of illusory existence

Nameless freedom

Is what I search

Nameless freedom

Is what I long

Sing with me

My friend

Only together

Freedom shall be found

The Cuckoo Sings

The cuckoo sings

Good news it brings

To my small cage

Of worldly things.

Please teach me

And set me free

My cuckoo friend

In an old cage I am,

Dirty cage

Worldly cage

Of birth, old age and death.

Please teach me

And set me free

My cuckoo friend

I wished that all birds like me

Could all be free

So I left your side

To help them break free

But nobody listened to me

Everyone is too busy

With worldly business

And since I am weak in the Dharma

Stuck in the cage I became

Suffering I am

Please teach me

And set me free

My cuckoo friend

Now I learned

That I can’t teach

Liberate anyone.

It’s all a construction of the ego.

It’s all about self-liberation

Whoever is tired of the saltiness of the Ocean of suffering

Will search for the purity of the sweet River

May all beings one day break free from this salty Ocean

May they find the source of the River of Life!

It’s time to emerge from the Ocean

Climb up the Mountain of Truth

And find the Source!

Please guide me

Dear cuckoo friend.

Quando cantas, pequeno pássaro? (When will you sing, little bird?)

Em Março toda a acção se junta

Na Primavera o tempo pergunta

Quando cantas, pequeno pássaro Buddha?

O Inverno tem sido muito frio

A tua voz o mundo necessita

Primavera chega

Dharma madura

Lua Cheia brilha

O caminho a Deus começa

Buddha acorda

A Lótus de Oito Pétalas abre

E o pequeno pássaro Buddha canta!

Before You Leave Come Say Bye

“Before you leave come say bye,”

Said the old man

To the young boy.

Good friends they became

Just like the Little Prince visiting the plane-wrecked Antoine Saint Exupery.

Was it accident that this young boy

Landed on the 3rd Planet in the Solar System?

Gravity has its own ways to pull people together,

And separating them.

The young boy learned that he had to leave soon

So hurriedly he rushed to say bye to the village community

And the old man in it.

But just as Gravity pulls people together,

It also pulls them apart

Making it hard to say bye.

Adding to this challenge,

People decomposed fast in this world

Like old ‘mushed’ paper

People got old and decomposed.

It was hard to say goodbye,

Somehow gravity was pulling them apart,

And the old man was decomposing like paper.

Paper like people

In a paper like world.

At first we stand straight and young

But soon we become old and curled.

Like balls of ‘mushed’ paper,

People and planets spin around

Joined and separated by the force of gravity.

Oh world,

Impermanent world,

You throw us together

And separate us

We are born,

We age,

We die,

Not having time to say a proper goodbye.

Remember as the body dies,

The soul lives on forever with God.

(So light up the spark of Love right here, right now, and Be with God.)

The Horse Owner

Once upon a time there was a horse owner who lost all his horses. Very sad and lonely, he went for a walk into the forest and stumbled upon a strong dark horse lost in it. This horse was stronger and taller than all his previous horses. The horse looked lost and confused in the forest so the horse owner tried to go help it. The horse owner approached the dark horse and tamed it with his kindness. Soon the horse started to follow and work for him. The owner could ride this horse everywhere at very fast speed. This dark horse would work very hard to follow any of the owner’s orders and the owner would praise and reward the horse for its hard work. Time went on, and the owner and the horse developed a relationship. Yet the dark horse had one very bad quality. It was very jealous and always wanted the owner to have full attention on it. Everytime the owner would ride another horse or even be friendly towards another horse, the dark horse would get very jealous and angry. And when the owner would try to ride the dark horse again, this horse would show its anger to the owner—the horse would jump around, go very fast, suddenly stop and make the owner fall and get hurt. The owner—sad, hurt and terrified didn’t know how to deal with the horse… Should I continue riding this horse? Should I run away from this horse? Should I find a new horse? This dark horse was very strong, powerful and scary so the owner didn’t know how to deal with it. Very worried, the owner got very sad and sick. Until one day, the owner realized that although he had lost all his horses, he still had lots of friends and relatives who really loved him and are ready to help him. Then the owner went to seek for help from his close friends and relatives and together they found a solution for ways to deal with the dark horse. You can still be friends with the dark horse but you can’t let it control your life. You can live without a horse but can’t live without your loved friends and relatives.

I dedicate this story to all those who suffer from their personal dark horses. Be strong, don’t be afraid and remember your close friends, teachers and/or relatives are there for you. Take the initiative, talk to them and they will help out. Stay strong and have faith.

Reflections On A Train

Life is like sitting on a train backwards facing

Not knowing when we will reach our destination,

The final destination.

After sometime the train resumes its journey back to its departing station.

Back and forth it goes.

Carrying an uncertain number of passengers,

All from different backgrounds:

Rich, poor, young, old, students, teachers, buyers, sellers…

On a bench sat a man,

Dressed in a shirt and pants like a middle class worker.

He took out a chopping board,

He must be a chef and he is trying to save time by chopping things here in the train,

Thought the mind,

And the man started chopping onions and boiled potatoes,

How fast and skilled he chopped

Finely dressed and finely chopped

What a skill!

Had a concentrated look in his eyes

Some contentment in his heart

Yet sometimes his mind wandered off

Should I be doing something else?

But chopping he continued

Is he going to take these vegetables home and cook?

Soon he finished his skillful job.

What is this man doing?

And he pulled out his muri (puffed rice) snack kit,

Dangerous kit this was,

A big metal box with lots of muri,

And different small containers of spices and condiments like

Boiled chickpeas, coconut strips and bujia (crispy fried snack with masala)

Everything danced around like it was Holi—the festival of colors

Customers saw this,

Desire arose,

And the maestro started his symphony,

His little spoon worked like a baton stick

Conducting a synaesthetic symphony of

Sounds, colors, smells, flavors and textures.

What a masterpiece!

He was not just a muri wallah (person associated with a specific job or service)

As many people would think.

He was a man selling completeness in life

(Althought he had his short mind wanderings and doubts with it,)

He was able to experience the ecstatic joy of concentration and sense of purpose in life.

He was a teacher,

Spreading the message that

No job is too small and no job is too big.

As long as you are mindful while performing it and pour Love into it,

Doing it as selfless service to others,

You become closer to God and to find fullness in life.

Just like a farmer who plows and works on his field,

You will soon reap the benefits from it.

Let Love spring forth from your Heart when you perform your job

Or else go find a new one that allows you to do so.

Life is short

Like a play

You find your role and perform it.

In the end,

All there is or isn’t

It’s just a child’s play…

Like a Raindrop Falling Into the Sea

Waterdrop by MrMEEAN
Waterdrop by MrMEEAN

A raindrop falls into the sea

Sent from the Clouds above.

The impact sends ripples all around,

Circular ripples,

Concentrically spreading into the vastness of the sea.

The raindrop soon

Becomes attached to the sea,

Turning itself into seawater.

This rain drop was once sweet and pure

But it became salty.

Salty with the tears fallen into the sea of suffering.

So salty this water droplet became that it lost all of its past memories.

So cycling in the sea,

It remained.

Purposeless wandering,

Vangrantly flowing,

The little droplet was dragged,

Recklessly pushed around by currents,
Never stopping,

Dipping down into the deep sea,

Surfacing up,

And flowing in different directions.

So cycling in the sea

It remained.

Truth is that all things are impermanent

Thus came the day in which the once pure water droplet

Surfaced up.

The droplet was carried up on the back of a blind sea turtle.

Once the turtle rose up into the surface

The water droplet splashed into the air

And saw Everything,

The Beauty of Creation,

The vastness of the Sea of suffering,

The never-ending Horizon

Touching the Sky

With its Heavenly white clouds

And the Golden Sun.

Its warm rays embraced the water droplet,

Breaking its chains that bonded it to the Sea.

The once pure and sweet rain droplet was finally Awakened.

The little droplet remembered all of its past

And it became Free water vapor that ascended back into the welcoming Sky.
